Mentoring is an important aspect of leadership. Describe a mentor that you have or have had in the past. What style of leadership did they use? What characteristics did they display that drew you to them as a mentor? Describe the importance of an effective mentor relationship for both the leader and the mentee Essay
Mentors are essential individuals in nursing students’ life since they help them overcome various nursing practice challenges. Before I began my first practicum, I was eager to experience what it feels like in a real nursing practice environment. I felt that I had enough knowledge to even work with no supervision since I had gained knowledge on different medical procedures forgetting that learning is a process that never ends. As Ozdemir (2019) accentuates, nurse education taxonomy involves five levels: expert, proficient, competent, beginner, and novice, translating me as a novice in the nursing practice during the practicum. After being introduced to the healthcare facility with the other nursing students, each individual was assigned a mentor. At first, I had no clue about the effectiveness of having a mentor, but within two days, I was already giving up since I had experienced much pressure that I had not anticipated. Upon realizing it, the mentor helped me realize my strengths and weaknesses, including the opportunities and threats I may encounter, which were essential for formulating my long- and short-term goals.

The mentor placed me in a pediatric unit where my first role was to work alongside the pediatrician to help me advance my skills and ability and gain confidence in nursing practice. Through my mentor’s transformational leadership, I realized my abilities and skills to be a professional practitioner, including my professional limits. Therefore, it is important to have a mentor even during nursing practice since they help one realize the most common opportunities and threats and provide informed advice on how to go about these issues. Also, through the mentors, one realizes their weaknesses and strengths, thus enabling them to plan their personal and professional goals appropriately. In conclusion, mentorship is essential to nursing students since it boosts their confidence.
