Nursing burnout is a significant issue facing healthcare organizations. Dall’Ora et al. (2020) describe burnout as a mechanism in which the body responds to excessive work-related stress. It is characterized by the lack of emotional resources (emotional exhaustion) and being emotionally drained. The high rate of burnout among nurses is associated with various work-related factors, including an unconducive working environment, high workloads, and long-working hours. Nursing burnout is a major factor contributing to rising patient safety issues, lower healthcare quality, high rate of mental issues, and turnover rate among nurses. According to Dall’Ora et al. (2020), burnout among nurses leads to reduced job performance, poor patient safety, poor quality of care, adverse events, increased medication errors, negative patient experience, high rate of hospital-acquired infections, increased rate of patient falls, high rate of absenteeism and turnover among nurses. Thus, evidence-based interventions should be implemented to address nursing burnout in a healthcare setting. The proposed interventions are in the form of a PICOT question stating “Among nursing practitioners (P), will the utilization of burnout coping mechanisms (I) compared to quitting the profession (C) lead to a reduction in work-related stress levels (0) within 6 months (T)?” This paper compares two peer-reviewed EBP sources supporting the proposed interventions.

Comparison of Peer-Reviewed EBP Sources
De Oliveira et al. (2019) conducted a study to assess strategies for preventing burnout syndrome in nurses. Another study was conducted by Khawa (2021) to evaluate burnout among nurses and coping mechanisms. The two sources are similar since both indicate the effectiveness of coping mechanisms in enabling nurses to cope with burnout
However, the two articles differ in terms of the burnout coping mechanisms proposed. Khawa (2021) proposed three effective coping approaches, including problem-oriented, avoidance coping strategies, and social support. The study findings indicated that these moderately enabled nurses to cope with burnout. However, superior outcomes were reported among nurses who were using problem-solving strategies to cope with burnout. Additionally, study findings indicated that self-assurance that others will appreciate a nurse’s job and having confidence in one’s abilities to perform his or her satisfactorily enabled nurses to cope with burnout.
On the other hand, De Oliveira et al.’s (2019) study findings indicated the effectiveness of alternative strategies in enabling nurses to cope with burnout. Applying various coping mechanisms, including cognitive coping strategies, yoga, compassion fatigue program, meditation, systematic clinical supervision, web-based stress management program, mindfulness, and enrolling in psychological and mental empowerment programs effectively enabled nurses to cope with burnout. Additionally, study findings indicated that resilience and coping skills enable nurses to handle burnout in their workplaces. De Oliveira et al. (2019) stated that resilience can be developed, taught, and strengthened via coping skills training programs. Therefore, using coping mechanisms effectively enable nurses to overcome burnout, resulting in better job performance and enhanced capacity to provide quality patient care.

Overall, the PICOT question proposed a coping mechanism as an evidence-based intervention for addressing nursing burnout. Similarly, reviewed sources indicated the effectiveness of various coping strategies in managing burnout among nurses. Coping strategies with positive results include cognitive coping strategies, yoga, compassion fatigue program, meditation, systematic clinical supervision, web-based stress management program, mindfulness, enrolling in psychological and mental empowerment program, resilience training, problem-oriented, avoidance coping strategies, and social support.
