Mentoring other nurses or nursing students is challenging. The first challenge faced by nursing mentors is the lack of adequate time for mentoring others. Nurses are usually assigned more workload and high nurse-to-patient ratios (Griffiths et al., 2020). This trend is associated with nurse staffing shortages in various healthcare organizations in the United States. Consequently, nurse mentors are left with very little time for mentorship. Another challenge facing mentors in nursing is the lack of a good relationship between the mentor and mentee. Most nurses and nursing students are reluctant to open up to their mentors, resulting in a lack of trust between both parties, which compromises the success of the mentorship program.
