|Description||Coronavirus Disease Pandemic was declared by WHO on March 11, 2020 (Cucinotta & Vanelli, 2020). Following the COVID-19 outbreak in Wuhan, China the virus has been spreading rapidly to various parts of the world, becoming a major public health concern. Consequently, countries have implemented various policies supporting vaccination/ immunization for COVID-19 to curb the fast-spreading coronavirus.
|Describe the policy in each country related to the identified healthcare issue||
The United States has not implemented a federal policy supporting vaccination/ immunization for COVID-19 nationwide. The federal policy was recently revised to regulate entry into public schools at all levels and require all employees to be immunized against COVID-19 (Fore, 2020). However, all states allow an exemption for immunization based on different reasons, including medical, religious, personal, and philosophical.
|The country has not implemented mandatory COVID-19 vaccination policies although it is mandatory for children enrolling in school to be vaccinated. However, the government works toward ensuring that most members of the public access the jab. Individuals are exempted from taking the vaccination on medical and religious grounds only.|
|What are the strengths of this policy?||The policy exempts individuals from taking the vaccine based on their medical, religious, personal, and philosophical reasons. Hence, individuals who are against being immunized are not forced to do so.

|What are the weaknesses of this policy?||Vaccination for COVID-19 is mandatory for school-going children in the United States (Fore, 2020). However, the safety of the vaccine in this population is unknown.
|Personal and philosophical beliefs are not justifiable exemptions from taking the vaccine, forcing individuals with personal and philosophical reasons to take the jab, is acting against their wish.|

|Social determinants of health influence vaccination for school-going children. Jabs are inaccessible among children from low-income families, increasing the risk of contracting COVID-19 in this population. For instance, jab is less accessible in areas with individuals with low socioeconomic status compared to those with high socioeconomic status.||Access to the vaccine among children enrolling in schools is influenced by the education and literacy level of the parents. For instance, uneducated parents are unaware of the impact of the jab in protecting their children against coronavirus, hence they fail to take their children for immunization.|
|How has each country’s government addressed cost, quality, and access to the selected global health issue?||The US government is addressing the cost, quality, and access of COVID-19 vaccination by ensuring that the jab is accessible in various parts of the country for free to ensure that a high number of Americans are immunized to reduce the risk of COVID-19, improving their overall health.
|Mexico’s government makes the jab highly accessible throughout the country, enabling all eligible individuals to be vaccinated, and improving their health.|
|How has the identified health policy impacted the health of the global population? (Be specific and provide examples)||Vaccination for COVID-19 impacted the health of the global population positively by ensuring that a huge number of Americans are immunized.
|Mandatory immunization of school-going children reduced the likelihood of contracting the virus, impacting the health of the global population positively.|
|Describe the potential impact of the identified health policy on the role of a nurse in each country.||Vaccination for COVID-19 in the United States increased the workload and duties of nurses in their respective healthcare settings since nurses are involved in educating individuals about the significance of being immunized against the virus.
|Nurses are at a high risk of contracting COVID-19 as they interact with patients following low immunization rates in Mexico (Esquivel-Chirino et al., 2021). Consequently, the virus impact nurses physically and psychologically, compromising their capacity to provide quality nursing care to patients with other clinical manifestations.|
|Explain how global health issues impact local healthcare organizations and policies in both countries. (Be specific and provide examples)||In the United States, vaccination for COVID-19 increased the number of individuals visiting healthcare organizations to be educated and immunized against the virus. For instance, nurses educate individuals about the effectiveness of jabs in preventing them from contracting the virus, increasing their workload. Thus, the government should contract more nurses during the COVID-19 pandemic.
|In Mexico, the government should develop responsive measures for addressing the adverse effects of COVID-19 on healthcare staff.|
|General Notes/Comments||In the United States, immunizing citizens is an effective intervention for addressing the COVID-19 pandemic, which is a global healthcare issue.

The high rate of coronavirus infections and deaths is a significant global public health concern. As at 29th March 2020, approximately 697,994 and 33, 421 COVID-19 cases and deaths, respectively had been confirmed in 202 countries and territories (Ayenigbara, 2020). The Western Pacific Region was the most affected part of the world. This region and its territories had reported approximately 104,146 cases and 3,660 deaths (Ayenigbara, 2020). Since then, COVID-19 cases and deaths have increased dramatically globally, affecting various aspects of people’s lives, including health, social, and economic. This problem has worsened potential severe third and fourth COVID-19 waves and COVID-19 vaccine inequity worldwide. As a nurse leader, I would advocate for the implementation of policies supporting vaccination/ immunization for COVID-19 worldwide. The vaccine is the most effective intervention for preventing individuals from contracting the coronavirus. Thus, implementing policies supporting vaccination/ immunization for COVID-19 worldwide will reduce the risk of contracting the virus globally. Additionally, the policy should support vaccine equality, allowing all individuals to access the vaccine irrespective of their socio-economic status.
Implementing policies supporting vaccination/ immunization for COVID-19 worldwide will reduce the risk of contracting the virus, among healthcare workers, including nurses, enabling them to remain focused and dedicated to providing safe, efficient, and high-quality patient care in their respective healthcare organizations. Additionally, incorporating policies supporting vaccination/ immunization for COVID-19 worldwide into the local practice of a nurse leader will increase the number of individuals immunized against the virus, reducing the risk of contracting the virus among nurses, reducing psychological distress associated with the high risk of contracting the virus. Consequently, nurses will provide high-quality, safe, and efficient care to their patients, resulting in positive health outcomes.

If you talk about a possible poor health outcome, do you believe that outcome will occur? Do you believe eye contact and personal contact should be avoided?
You would have a difficult time practicing as a nurse if you believed these to be true. But they are very real beliefs in some cultures.
Differences in cultural beliefs, subcultures, religion, ethnic customs, dietary customs, language, and a host of other factors contribute to the complex environment that surrounds global healthcare issues. Failure to understand and account for these differences can create a gulf between practitioners and the public they serve.
