Health Assessment Essay

Pregnancy testing remains one of the most controversial issues in the provision of healthcare services to minors and young adults. The provided case study covers a situation where the 17-year old girl, under the parenting of a single father, is confronted with a good deal of uneasiness and pressure from the father to undertake the pregnancy test. As an advanced practice nurse, obtaining informed consent from the allegedly pregnant minor and the parent should be the first-step of intervention in order to determine and guide the consultation, diagnosis and treatment processes (Linton et al., 2018). Moreover, considering that the daughter had not consented to the demand from the single father to undergo a pregnancy test at the facility, the role of the advanced practice nurse is to determine some of the evidence-based guidelines as well as ethics considerations to guide the final response to this scenario.

First, the right of a pregnant minor to consent or refuse consultation, diagnosis or treatment for anything relating to pregnancy (except abortion) must be upheld. The ultimate decision by the single father to make the intricate healthcare decision for the young girl to take the pregnancy test may be justified since she is under 18-years of age (TLH, 2022). However, the use of a written informed consent document may help to clearly elaborate on the state in which the pregnancy testing procedure is undertaken (New York Civil Liberties Union, 2018). Moreover, compliance with state and federal guidelines regarding a minor teen’s right to informed consent may assist to ensure any risks and problems to the pregnant patient or the fetus are identified and avoided (Shapiro, 2019). Whilst conducting the pregnancy test is permitted, the disclosure of positive pregnancy results by the advance nurse to the parent may contravene the teen’s right to informed consent.

With regards to ethical considerations, the child in question can be said to have enough competence, intelligence and understanding to completely identify and recognize what is involved in pregnancy testing (TLH, 2022). Therefore, strong emphasis must be placed on upholding the ethical principles of beneficence, non-maleficence, and accountability and due diligence.

Write a detailed one-page narrative (not a formal paper) explaining the health assessment information required for a diagnosis of your selected patient (include the scenario number). Explain how you would respond to the scenario as an advanced practice nurse using
evidence-based practice guidelines and applying ethical considerations. Justify your response using at least three different references from current evidence-based literature.
