Precisely, the scenario articulates a clinical situation where parental refusal of childhood vaccines presents a problematic situation for a healthcare practitioner. As an advanced practice nurse, the first step to addressing this scenario is to explore the key reasons behind why the parents of the 5-year-old son had objected that their son was not to receive vaccinations against a number of life-threatening diseases (Al-Wutayd et al., 2022). Knowing the main parental concerns and questions regarding childhood vaccines will enable me as an advanced practice to comprehend the key driving factors for hesitancy, and to develop and implement interventions that will educate the parents (Burton et al., 2018).
Strong emphasis will be placed on using education as a key means to equip the patients of the child with requisite information and data aimed at enabling them to make responsible and appropriate immunization decisions for their son. Another way to respond to the scenario is to inform the parents about the laws requiring immunization for school attendance in the United States (Al-Wutayd et al., 2022). Toth (2020) established that a number of life-threatening yet vaccine-preventable diseases such as Smallpox, polio, and others have so been eradicated due to the increased involvement of parents/caregivers and children in the various immunization programs. As an advanced practice nurse, responding to the scenario demands a strong emphasis on leveraging parental confidence in vaccines as one of the most viable means to raise awareness of the safety, efficacy and utility of vaccines (McGrew & Taylor, 2022). In this case, efforts must be made to boost trust in the healthcare system in order to ensure the parents of the unvaccinated child realizes that the decision to decline childhood vaccines for their child might expose their son to increased risk of morbidity and mortality associated with vaccine-preventable infections such as Flu, Hepatitis B, and even COVID-19.
